Two researchers from Karachi, Pakistan – Shama Siddiqui (Associate Professor, DHA Suffa University) and Anwar Ahmed Khan (Associate Professor, Millennium Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship) -started their first COALESCE secondment at Walton Institute in South East Technological University, Ireland on October 28th 2024. Both researchers acquired their Computer Science PhD from the Institute of Business Administration (Karachi) and their areas of interest include wireless networks, specifically design and optimisation of link layer protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). They have developed various Internet of Things (IoT) prototypes for healthcare, vehicular, home automation, education and other smart city applications. For COALESCE, Shama and Anwar are focusing on WSN protocol design for achieving a combined performance optimization of energy and data networks, specifically for industrial IoT.
At Walton Institute, Shama and Anwar have been working under the direct supervision of the COALESCE PI, Dr Indrakshi Dey, Head of the Programmable Autonomous Systems division. To date, Shama and Anwar have submitted 2 papers for possible presentation at the 21st International Conference on Networking and Services (ICNS 2025), taking place March 9th to March 13th 2025, titled 1) Delay Management Using Packet Fragmentation in Wireless Industrial Automation Systems, and 2) A Comparative Analysis of High-Level vs. Low-Level Simulations for Dynamic MAC Protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks.
In addition, they are also presenting at Digital Education Conference (DEC) happening at SETU on 10th-11th December 2024. The title of the talk is ‘IoT for SDG-4: Leveraging Heart Rate Sensors for Exam and Presentation Stress Detection.’
