Masters student Petros Stylianou from the University of Cyprus recently spent time on secondment at Volue in Finland. Volue is a prominent provider of technology solutions, delivering software, insights, and services that support the global shift toward resilient and sustainable systems essential to society. The objective of Petros’ secondment at the company was to gain a comprehensive understanding of the industry’s priorities regarding energy systems and markets.
Additionally, Petros visited LUT University in Lappeenranta, where he engaged with a group of experts on diverse research topics, whose broad expertise could contribute significantly to the advancement of his future research.
During his time in Volue, Petros had multiple discussions with Development Manager Dr Amir Safdarian about the company’s ongoing projects as well as his own research. Together they brainstormed and explored potential opportunities for collaboration between wireless communication and energy systems. Subsequently, at LUT University in Lappeenranta, Petros participated in several meetings with the research team. He also had the opportunity to present experimental work on the Experimental Evaluation of Machine Learning-aided SWIPT Using Multisine Signals, conducted in collaboration with PhD student Mohamed Selim Korium during his secondment in Cyprus, alongside advisor Elio Faddoul and the supervision of Professor Ioannis Krikidis. At LUT University, Petros’ primary collaborator was Mohamed Selim Korium, working under the supervision of Professor Pedro Juliano Nardelli. “The secondment offered valuable benefits. From a research standpoint, it enabled fruitful collaboration on a project that was eventually submitted to a conference. Most importantly, it provided me with the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of people, fostering meaningful relationships and lasting friendships,” explained Petros. “Collaborating with a diverse group enhances your knowledge by exposing you to new viewpoints and innovative methods while also improving your problem-solving skills and adaptability. And engaging with individuals from different cultures, backgrounds, and research fields fosters creativity and encourages critical thinking.”
Whilst on secondment, Petros also had the opportunity to travel to Malmi, Helsinki, Tikkurila, and Lappeenranta, where he enjoyed the forests and landscapes. Additionally, he explored the lake in the Lappeenranta region and even tried skiing for the first time. “The experience of combining work with discovering the country’s natural beauty made my secondment an unforgettable experience,” said Petros.
