Mohamed Korium a researcher from LUT University, Finland, recently spent time on secondment in CyRIC, Cyprus. CyRIC is the only Business Innovation Center (BIC) in Cyprus certified by the European Business Network. CYRIC offers Research and Innovation Services for customers in the fields of engineering design and prototyping, electronics and communications and software solutions.
Mohamed chose CyRIC for his secondment due to the group’s expertise in many different areas, which can support the development of his doctoral dissertation. His primary collaborators included Junior Researcher Elio Faddoul and Master’s student Petros Stylianou, under the supervision of Ioannis Krikidis, Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the University of Cyprus. Together, they held weekly discussions focused on the development of a waveform dataset. “After several brainstorming sessions with the research group to identify open problems and explore potential solutions, we had several research ideas and we chose one of these ideas for collaboration and held weekly meetings to track progress,“ explained Mohamed.
He added, “The secondment provided significant benefits both to me and to the COALESCE project. From a research perspective, it facilitated collaboration on two complementary topics: the creation of a waveform dataset led by my collaborators and, from my side, the development of techniques to detect, classify, and distinguish waveforms for security purposes. For the COALESCE project, this collaboration is set to result in a joint research paper, which is planned for submission in the beginning of 2025.”
Speaking of his time in Cyprus, Mohamed said the biggest takeaway from this experience was realizing just how much you can gain by brainstorming with researchers from different cultures, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. It highlighted the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. Working closely with a diverse group helped to understand the benefits of research visits for a researcher.
Mohamed also had the chance to explore the country’s rich history and visit its beautiful coastal cities, discovering the variety of museums and restaurants in each city, with the experience of combining work with cultural exploration making the trip even more memorable
